House on Dodworth Crossroads - dated 1641

There is a house on Dodworth crossroads, opposite the Library and next to the Budgens shop. Over the front door is a stone marked 1641. Some say it is the oldest house in the village. Do you know if that is correct? Do you know anything else about the house?

  1. The house is called "The Woodhouse". It is actually much older than 1641, dating back to Tudor times. In the 17th century it belonged to William Brooke, a wealthy tanner who moved to Dodworth from Huddersfield in 1621, and he rebuilt the old timber framed house in stone in 1641, hence the letters WB and I next to the date ("I" or "J" as it should read stands for Judith his wife). It is one of the oldest houses in the village, but not the oldest.
The Brooke family were the wealthiest in Dodworth up until about 1780, owning most of the land and farms and 3 tanyards, tanning being the main industry at the time.

  2. The house at the crossroads has now been made into a pizza shop. Some people say it looks better now - what do you think?
