Roadworks to replace the water main ran from the Crossroads to Ratten Row and recently were in place; in sections, for several weeks. The contractors were asked if they had discovered any archaeological things of interest. Disappointingly they said 'no', but it was evident from looking at the trench they had cut, that just below the road surface was a foundation of substantial stones set on end - rather than flat as in a local drystone wall - this was said to be typical of the structure of an 'old road' and may be an indication of the original type of construction.
