Keresforth Road School

The huts

The Huts were some sort of prefabricated buildings erected after World War 2 on ground downhill from the main school building. A path connected them to the playground. A variety of classes were taught there 'down in The Huts' including woodwork in the classroom to the far left, and either art of history in what may have been the middle classroom of three.

Do you remember any of the above? - if so please share it here...

  1. At the risk of duplicity here goes again. I also was a labourer on the civil engineering feat to construct the dam for the Kayak project. This was overseen by Mr McDonald, the woodworking master and, if memory serves me well Mr Keys, the Rural Science master. I seem to remember some of this work was undertaken outside school hours but in those days anything was acceptable. Upon completion of the dam and dredging operations I was truly dismayed to be learn that I would not be allowed to demonstrate my skills in the kayak because I could not swim. Now had I been made aware of this minor clause I am pretty sure I would have been making better use of my time eating nettles or jumping through barbed wire fences. I do remember a couple of classmates who were " Jammy enough " to sail the high seas but prudence prevails. The classrooms at that particular site were called the
" HORSA " huts and from my jaded memory Mr McDonald was the Woodworking master and occupied the northern ( stream side ) end of the building. The middle classroom was the domain of Mr Garforth who taught History and Art and at the opposite end was Miss McFee who taught English. The acronym HORSA always intrigued me and I eventually learned it stood for Hutting Operation for the Raising of the School leaving Age. These " Sheds " were a quick and cheap solution to accommodate the needs presented by the raising of the school leaving age from 14 to 15 years old. The original intention was a 10 year life span but as with many similar pre-fab builds, over double that lifespan resulted. ~~~ Supplied by MurphyMax
